During worship, we are sent forth in the power of the Holy Spirit to perform the service that God has set before us. Service is an important element of the Christian life, and, through prayer and study, we are equipped to love and serve both God and our neighbor.

I first became aware of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin as a teenager in the 1960s. The parish was known as a place where worship was rich and music was vibrant. These two things – experienced together in the best of times – have made Saint Mary’s the parish home of some, and a frequent destination of many more, for generations. I was an occasional Saint Mary’s visitor for decades and, in the past three years, have been privileged to play the organ and conduct the choir regularly at Saint Mary’s. I hope others have been blessed here as I have.

Saint Mary’s has been a welcome presence in my life for some time now. While in the city one fateful Saturday morning and looking around to find a peaceful place of worship, I was guided by the Holy Spirit to this church. Working nearby, I discovered that Evening Prayer was offered every weeknight at Saint Mary’s. New to the Episcopal Church, I expected to find similarity by way of The Book of Common Prayer, but I found much more that I did not expect and could not have imagined. Daily Morning and Evening Prayer led by the clergy, the sisters, and laypeople was a foretaste for me that worship of our Lord was not something limited to Sunday mornings; it was to be lived daily and shared in public. Seeing visitors mingle in the pews with our unsheltered neighbors seeking a peaceful refuge while we prayed resonated with the Christ-centered hole in my heart. I am grateful to have found a parish home in this community.
